Introduction to the use of wild clay

Tierra de Arcillas is a ceramic workshop located at the foot of the Alpujarra Almeriense. Through the use of local clays, which Julia and Milena collect, process and convert into clay bodies, they make pieces with origin that share the identity and story of a specific territory.

During this course you will learn to identify different types of clay in nature, collect them, process them and turn them into pieces with unique characteristics. Together we will build a kiln in which you will fire all the unique pieces you create from the collected clay, spending the afternoon and evening around the fire.

At the end of the course you will take home a piece fired in a self-made kiln, made with clay that you have collected yourself. In addition, all participants will receive a guide with everything learned in the workshop on the use of natural clays. With this guide you will be able to create your own pieces with local clay wherever you are.

Key skills you will learn

Finding and identifying wild clays

Processing techniques

Tests to know better a clay

Basic clay bodies using wild clays

Understanding the results after firing

The location - Granjas Las Mecías

The course will be held at Las Mecías, a regenerative farm – collaborative space located in the Alpujarra of Granada. It is an idyllic place to disconnect from the rest of the world and connect with the surrounding nature.

Before coming to Spain, Nina and Laura worked as cooks in various restaurants around the world. Now, they cook for their guests with local ingredients, some of which they collect and grow themselves, hoping one day to be completely self-sufficient.

On their land there are two farmhouses, the main house and guest house, and a yurt, all recently renovated and carefully decorated. There is a swimming pool in the garden, and guests can enjoy any fruit from the trees while strolling around.
