Tierra de arcillas are a small ceramic studio located at the foot of the Alpujarra Almeriense, in southern Spain. Behind this project we are Julia and Milena; Julia obsessed with the search for the origin; Milena passionate about light and darkness.
The main objective of Tierra de arcillas is to give back to the object its identity, making its origin visible, and that is why we use local natural clays to create our own clay bodies and glazes, adapting to each clay that we find on our way and getting to know it to be able to work with it.
Through this course we want to share our interest in clays and awaken your curiosity to go out into nature and get to know your environment, which you are surrounded by every day.
Las Mecias
Laura and Nina are the founders behind Las Mecías, a self-sustaining and regenerative farm in the Alpujarra (Cástaras). When they found this area by chance, they fell in love with the wild nature and its changing landscape, so tired of working in the hospitality industry they decided to embark on a new path.
Imagine that you wake up in a place where you can see the sunrise and the sunset. A place where fresh bread and homemade orange juice are part of the daily ritual. A place where everything is calm and there is space for inspiration to flourish and the relationship with oneself to be renewed. All this is what you will find at Las Mecías, accompanied by a culinary experience from the garden to the table, in which Laura and Nina put their enthusiasm and their hearts into everything they cook.
During this course you will learn to recognize clays in nature, collect them, process them and turn them into pieces with unique characteristics. Together we will build an ephemeral kiln in which to fire the collected clays, spending the afternoon – night around the fire while we feed it with firewood.
At the end of the course you will take home a piece fired in a wood kiln and made with clay that you have collected yourself. In addition, all participants will receive a guide with everything learned in the workshop on the use of natural clays. With this guide you will be able to create your own pieces with local clay wherever you are.
